Cincinnati Opera, an American opera company based in Cincinnati, Ohio, is
the second oldest opera company in the United States. It was founded in 1920.
For over fifty years, Cincinnati Opera's performances were held at the
Cincinnati Zoo Pavilion. During the years at the Zoo, a number of now
famous opera singers frequented the stage including Plácido Domingo, Norman
Treigle, Beverly Sills, Sherrill Milnes, Montserrat Caballé, James Morris, and
Barbara Daniels.
In 1972, Cincinnati Opera moved from the Zoo Pavilion to its present venue,
Music Hall, a 3,417-seat theater listed as a National Historic Landmark by the
U.S. Department of the Interior.
In recent years, Cincinnati Opera has returned to the Cincinnati Zoo for a one
night performance to celebrate its historic roots at the Cincinnati Zoo &
Botanical Garden with a “Back to the Zoo” Concert, presented at the Wings of
Wonder Theater. Opera fans, Zoo lovers, and people of all ages enjoy opera
delights, memories from the Zoo days, and close encounters with animals.
Cincinnati Opera presents world-class artists and conductors, important
company debuts, stunning sets and costumes, and the spectacular Cincinnati
Symphony Orchestra. Today the company is hailed as Cincinnati’s “prime
summer arts festival” attracting a passionate regional audience as well as opera
tourists from throughout the U.S. and Canada.
In addition, Cincinnati Opera presents Opera Goes to Church - evenings of
gospel, sacred, jazz, and classical music held at churches throughout the
community. The community concerts feature internationally acclaimed artists
from Cincinnati Opera’s mainstage summer season, dynamic congregational
choirs, youth performers, and some of the hottest jazz musicians in the region.
