Cincinnati State to Open Charter Community High School
|
The STEM Academy at Cincinnati State, a charter community school for high school students, will open on
Cincinnati State’s main campus starting Sept. 4.
The school will be one of three STEM community schools in Ohio, and the second in the state to be located on a
college campus. It will serve students in grades 9-12. The STEM (for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
Academy at Cincinnati State will provide students with high level academic classes and allow them to enroll
simultaneously in programs at Cincinnati State, at no cost to the student.
The STEM Academy has received more student applications than it can accommodate. Enrollment for the first term
has reached 200, the maximum that program organizers sought during the initial year. However, a waiting list has
been formed, and prospective students may apply for future openings and enroll for the next term. Eventually, The
STEM Academy plans to expand to about 800 students and become a complete high school with full athletic
programming.
“This is a breakthrough. At the same time, it is consistent with the goals of a community college,” said Cincinnati
State President O’dell M. Owens. “It lets us bring tremendous resources together in a setting that will be
inspirational for this group of young people.”
While there have been many initiatives across the country encouraging students to take advantage of educational
options, the design of The STEM Academy at Cincinnati State differs in several aspects:
- First, the school is sponsored directly by the Ohio Department of Education, a partnership only two
community schools in the state of Ohio enjoy.
- Unlike some of the larger, higher profile charter schools, The STEM Academy is a true non-profit school. There
is no educational management organization drawing public funding away from students. The school is
organized the same as a traditional public school.
- In traditional Post-Secondary Options Programs, programming and course work are limited to specific courses.
STEM students have more than 100 programs, licenses, and certificates available to them at Cincinnati State,
at no cost to the student or their families.
“It is our hope that an industrious student can enter The STEM Academy and earn their high school diploma and a
license or certificate or even their associate’s degree, at no cost to the student,” said Beth Hensley, superintendent
of The STEM Academy.
