The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden recently received two, very prestigious grants from the
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).  IMLS National Leadership Grants are awarded
for projects that:  “address critical needs of the museum field and that have the potential to
advance practice in the profession so that museums can improve services for the American
public.”   These highly competitive grants were awarded to the Cincinnati Zoo's Lindner Center
for Conservation & Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW), a global leader in wildlife
conservation, to support two projects.

The first, a National Leadership Grant (NLG) for $345,777 over three years, will support,
“Expanding access and building capacity for African and Asian rhino reproductive care within
North American AZA/WAZA facilities:  a Rhino Assisted Reproduction Enterprise.”   The
Cincinnati Zoo award supports CREW’s work on both Asian and African rhinos.

The second, a Museums for America Grant for $126,155 over three years, supports CREW’s Small
Cat Signature Project - “Collection Stewardship of Imperiled Small Cats.”

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the
nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The IMLS mission is to create strong libraries
and museums that connect people to information and ideas. It is awarded through peer review
and requires, at least, a 100 percent match in monetary contribution by the applicant.

High-fives Cincinnati Zoo and CREW!
The world famous Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, rated the #1 attraction locally and one
of the top zoos in the nation by Zagat Survey,  was granted accreditation  by the Association
of Zoos & Aquariums’s (AZA) independent Accreditation Commission.  AZA is the accrediting
body for the top zoos and aquariums in the United States and six other countries.

“Only zoos and aquariums that meet the highest standards are accredited by the Association
of Zoos and Aquariums,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. “The community should
take great pride in knowing that the Cincinnati Zoo is a proven leader in the care and
conservation of wildlife, and in inspiring people to take action to protect the natural world.”

To be accredited, the Cincinnati Zoo underwent a thorough review to ensure it has and will
continue to meet rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs,
conservation, education, and safety.  AZA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the
advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, animal welfare, education,
science, and recreation, requires zoos and aquariums to successfully complete this rigorous
accreditation process every five years in order to be members of the Association.

“While the accreditation standards are increasingly challenging each cycle, and the process
takes a great deal of work and time for most of our team, it is very valuable to our
organization,” said Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard. “AZA accreditation is no rubber
stamp, even though we are a major zoo. Through this process we become a stronger
organization and ensure that we are exceeding modern standards for our industry.”
