New Aquaponics System at the Cincinnati Zoo

Cincinnati State Wins $2.75 million Manufacturing Training Grant

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s new aquaponics system is officially up and running! As part of the
Zoo’s ongoing “Go Green” initiative the system was installed and began cycling late in the summer season just
outside of the Zoo’s Base Camp Café restaurant, which is located within the new AFRICA exhibit. The Base
Camp Café was recently announced as the Greenest Restaurant in America by the Green Restaurant
Association and the new aquaponics system was a critical component in that certification.
“An aquaponics system like the one located at the Base Camp Café is self-sustainable and produces fresh and
organic produce—with zero waste,” said Sophia Cifuentes, Sustainability Coordinator at the Cincinnati Zoo. “It
is a closed-loop system that combines aquaculture (the rearing of fish; in this case albino catfish and bluegill),
that in turn help sustain hydroponics (the growing of vegetables). Simply put, the waste from the fish is used
as fertilizer for the plants, who in turn convert potentially toxic chemicals from the water into nitrates which
makes for a healthy environment for the fish. It comes full-circle!”
The produce harvested from the Zoo’s system is currently being used by the Base Camp Café restaurant. Right
now it yields tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, basil, and a variety of other herbs that are used daily in chef
specials, hand-carved sandwiches, and sauces, among other featured items. In the future, the Zoo hopes to
expand the usage of this self-sustaining development to help feed animals, and even possibly expand to the
Cincinnati community. As the “Greenest Zoo in America”, this is yet another giant step towards making the
organization even more self-sustainable.

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded Cincinnati State a
$2.75 million grant to expand its ability to provide
training for manufacturing careers. The grant, part of the
third round of the Department of Labor’s Trade
Adjustment Assistance Community College Training
(TAACCCT) training grants, marks the second time that
Cincinnati State has received a TAACCCT grant. In 2011,
Cincinnati State was named the lead college in a $19.6
million Round 1 grant to manage a national Health

Pathways Consortium that helps prepare individuals for careers in the health care industry.
The college will use the manufacturing training grant to establish a Greater Cincinnati Manufacturing Careers
Accelerator (GCMCA). The accelerator will help provide regional manufacturers with a pool of potential
employees trained in welding and CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) operations.
The Greater Cincinnati Manufacturing Careers Accelerator will involve a collaboration between Cincinnati
State’s Center for Innovative Technologies (an academic division housing engineering, computing and high tech
programs) and its Evendale-based Workforce Development Center, which provides customized workforce
training to employers as well as short-term, retail training programs for individuals.
The GCMCA will develop curriculum and training as part of a latticed career pathway in manufacturing designed
to lead to a variety of employment opportunities. These include CNC machine operator, welder (MIG/TIG), first
line supervisor of production workers, mechanical engineering technician.
Congrats and High-fives Cincinnati State!
