A Caring Touch, LLC
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is the only Ohio
institution to receive a prestigious National Leadership Grant
from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in 2012.

This competitive grant was awarded to the Cincinnati Zoo to
support a three-year research study at the Zoo’s Carl H. Lindner
Jr. Family Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered
Wildlife (CREW) that will provide critical information for
botanical gardens in the U.S. and worldwide to aid in developing
strategies and methods for cryopreservation as a tool for plant
conservation.

The Zoo will receive $461,808 in grant award money and the
results of the study should provide botanical gardens with a
significant leap forward in the body of knowledge from which to
draw in order to develop their own strategies for the stewardship
of their collections.

High-fives to all at CREW!
Aspiring Attorneys Complete SWEL Program
Cincinnati Zoo Awarded
National Leadership Grant for Plant Conservation
Nearly 30 students completed the eight-week Summer Work Experience in Law (SWEL) program, with hopes of being a
step closer to becoming lawyers.

The SWEL Class of 2012 spent the summer working alongside legal professionals in area law firms, corporate law
departments and in the offices of state and federal judges.   In addition, SWEL students participated in special
sessions with speakers including retired Judge Nathaniel R. Jones and the Honorable S. Arthur Spiegel and Walter H.
Rice, a city hall presentation by Councilmember Yvette Simpson, and a candid "Beyond the Robes" panel with Judges
Pat Fischer, Fanon Rucker, Tyrone Yates, Dwayne Mallory and William Mallory.  Students were also given advice from
attorneys representing Xpedx, AK Steel, Burg Simpson, Omnicare Cintas, Duke Energy and Macy’s.

Other highlights of the summer included Corporate Law days at GE Aviation and Procter and Gamble, a Criminal Law
session featuring representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Hamilton County Public Defender’s Office and
private practitioners from W.C. Cross and Associates, the Lewis Law Firm and Porter and Wright.  Students attended
Law School Admission Tests (LSAT) preparation sessions and legal writing sessions, took a trip to Washington D.C.
with visits to area law schools, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Office of Senator Rob Portman.  The
program culminated with a luncheon at the Cincinnati Bar Association.

SWEL was developed in 1988 as a pilot program of the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Bar
Association Round Table as a collaborative effort to diversity in the Greater Cincinnati legal community.

Congrats and Best Wishes to the SWEL participants!
