Cincinnati Observatory Graduates Future Galileos 2011
|
The Cincinnati Observatory recently graduated a new
class of Galileos. On the evening of September 9, 2011,
twenty (20) educators-teams gathered at the Observatory
to show off their twenty, 8" Dobsonian telescopes. Started
in 2009, the Future Galileos program trains applicants to
use telescopes and deliver astronomy education
programs. Once they have completed three training
courses and have given at least three programs, they ARE
astronomers and get to keep these quality telescopes for
future use.
The 20 winners were chosen from 74 applicants based on
their viable, detailed plans to use the telescope for
education. To date, the now 80 Galileos have reached over
22,000 people in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana and
conducted over 490 events.
The project is far from over. NASA has graciously selected
the Future Galileos program to be funded through 2012.
This funding will allow for the continuing support of the
80 recipients as well as award an additional 20 telescope s
next year. By 2012 there will be 100 quality telescopes in
the region - making Cincinnati, "TELESCOPE TOWN."
Applications for the next class of Future Galileos will be
accepted between January 1 and March 31, 2012. If
interested in learning more about the program, contact
Dean Regas, Outreach Astronomer of the Cincinnati
Observatory at 513-321-5186 or send an email to
dean@cincinnatiobservatory.org.
High-fives and Congrats to the Cincinnati Observatory
and all Future Galileos grads!
