Village Life's Successful October Brigade 2013

2nd Place Honors for Cincinnati State Team

Village Life Outreach Project (VLOP), a Cincinnati based nonprofit on a mission to unite communities to
promote Life, Health and Education, focuses work on three remote and impoverished villages in the Rorya
district of Tanzania, East Africa. VLOP’s October Brigade 2013 recently returned back to Cincinnati after
successfully executing projects to improve lives in Tanzania while strengthening a cross-cultural connection.
Seventeen (17) University of Cincinnati faculty and students along with professionals from the fields of
Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy travelled to Tanzania and treated over 1,500 patients in Mobile Field Clinics,
thwarting life-threatening cases of malaria and other tropical diseases, while providing preventive health
education to the masses.
877 schoolchildren were treated for Schistosomiasis and worms following the work of 2 Duke University
students who spent all summer educating Village Life’s three target villages about these conditions. UC's
College of Nursing and UC Medical Center conducted the annual nursing conference, teaching Tanzanian
nurses about Burkitt's Lymphoma, late pre-term infant care, and the fundamentals of neonatal resuscitation.
Engineers Without Borders (UC's chapter, with guidance from the Greater Cincinnati Professional Chapter)
surveyed the recently completed Kingigoro Primary School in Burere Village, made repairs to the rainwater
catchment system in Nyambogo, and laid the foundation for the Water Distribution Project in Nyambogo. Phase
one of this project is the drilling of the well and installation of the solar pump and is scheduled to take place
in early 2014.

The state champion respiratory therapy student team at
Cincinnati State recently earned second place honors in a
national quiz competition affectionately known in the
respiratory community as the “Sputum Bowl.” During
their trip the Cincinnati State students had the
opportunity to meet Dr. Forrest M. Bird, an American
inventor known in the industry as the "Father of
Mechanical Ventilation."
State champion teams from 17 states took part in this
event, which is in fact a rather daunting test of
knowledge about the field of respiratory therapy. The
competition was held in Anaheim, Calif., before an
audience of about 1,000 at the American Association for
Respiratory Care’s International Respiratory Convention
& Exhibition.
High-fives!
