Outstanding Mentors Recognized for Helping Youth Mentees Get There
Cincinnati Youth Collaborative (CYC) volunteers were treated to a wonderful celebration
honoring them for their commitment to young people in Cincinnati.  The night of
celebration honored 15 outstanding volunteer mentors at the annual Thank Your Mentor
Day Celebration.  The 2011 CYC Outstanding Volunteer Mentors represent a diverse and
accomplished group of individuals that are positively impacting the lives of young people.

Outstanding Mentors honored: Dorothy Blake, Harry Blanton, Cynthia Blocksom, Trinitii
D. Brewer, Nancy DeZarn, Wade Edwards, Anita Kuderer, Lori Meyer, Mariela Oyola-Brauch,
John Pascoe, Janet Schenk, Andy Sims, Alicia Tidwell, Tamiko Ware, and Ed Wolterman.

Three outstanding mentor awards were given:
Helping Them Get There - John Pascoe, University of Cincinnati Medical School
 Got There - Nancy Dezarn,
United for Youth - Alicia Tidwell, Luxottica Retail

This year's National Mentoring Month theme: Help Them Get There, captures the essence
of how mentors help young people succeed - helping them achieve academically, helping
them explore the world around them, helping them envision a bright future and
ultimately helping them to graduate from high school and take the next steps towards
post-secondary opportunities.  In addition volunteers with 5-9 years of experience and
10+ years of experience were also recognized.

Omar Cummings, one of the most exciting scorers in American MLS soccer today, was
inducted into the Cincinnati State Athletic Hall of Fame on Jan. 22.  “We are proud to
recognize Omar’s achievements and welcome him into Cincinnati State’s Athletic Hall of
Fame,’’ said Theresa Check, Cincinnati State’s athletic director.

Cummings, a native of Jamaica, started his American career at Cincinnati State in 2003.  He
played two years for the Surge, where he won All-American honors before graduating and
moving on to the University of Cincinnati, where he was twice named to the All Big-East
Team.  After leaving UC he was drafted in the third round by the Colorado Rapids, where he
has blossomed into one of the most feared strikers in the league.

In 2009 he scored eight goals and recorded 12 assists.  In the season that just ended he
accounted for a team-high 14 goals to help lead the Rapids to the MLS championship.  For his
individual scoring achievement he was awarded the team’s "Golden Boot" award.

At present Cummings is on loan from the Rapids to Aston Villa in the English Premier
League – one of the most competitive venues in the soccer world. He is scheduled to return
to the Rapids by mid-March to help the team defend its 2010 MLS championship.
