Cincinnati State Awards Community-based Scholarships
11th Annual Women of Excellence
The first ever recipients of a novel community-based scholarship program at Cincinnati State were recognized on
Nov 19th at a meeting of the South Cumminsville Community Council.  In a ceremony that touched on the legacy
of the Civil Rights movement,
Cincinnati State and the South Cumminsville Community Council awarded two
full scholarships to incoming students at the college.

The community-based scholarships represent a model designed to involve local residents in an effort to support
recipients.   Scholarships were funded from a gift to the college by Cincinnati arts and civic lobbyist Dick Weiland
in memory of the late Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Jr., who helped organize the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference with Martin Luther King and who was a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights battles in Birmingham,
Alabama.

Cincinnati State President Dr. O’dell M. Owens and South Cumminsville Community Council President Marilyn
Evans presented the scholarships, valued at $10,000 each, to:

Chimere Martin, a Cincinnati native, who at age 30 has already earned certificates at Cincinnati State related to
emergency medical care and health and has attended other colleges. She plans to now pursue a degree in nursing at
Cincinnati State.

Dresden R. Passmore-Jones, a New Jersey native who has lived in Ohio for more than 17 years and in South
Cumminsville the last three, has worked as a customer service representative with Cincinnati Bell Directory
Assistance and AT&T for more than 12 years.  She plans to enroll in the pastry arts program at Cincinnati State
.

The scholarship recipients were chosen by the South Cumminsville Community Council on the basis of
recommendations from a committee comprising local business, educational and civic leaders and scholarship
award criteria which included residency, preparation for college-level work and the completion of an essay.
Under terms of a protocol between Cincinnati State and the South Cumminsville Community Council, residents
of the neighborhood are expected to help ensure that Martin and Passmore-Jones have the support they need – be
it transportation, housing or simply encouragement – to be successful in their academic pursuits.

High-fives Cincinnati State, South Cumminsville Community Council, and scholarship recipients!
