Lakota West Marching Band to Perform in Two Prestigious Events Televised Nationwide
UC and Cincinnati State Widen Academic Pathways
The Lakota West Marching Firebirds band will perform in two prestigious events - the 2013 Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade and the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade.  Both events will be nationally televised.

The Lakota West Marching Firebirds will march in front of millions of viewers in New York City when they
perform in the 2013 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  The Lakota West Marching Firebirds are the only high
school band from Ohio and one of only 11 bands nationwide selected to perform in this year’s parade.

Last month, the Lakota West marching band earned a return invitation to the Tournament of Roses Parade on
January 1, 2015.  The 275 member marching band holds the distinction of being the first Southwest Ohio high
school band to earn an invitation to the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA, back in 2008.  The
Lakota West band, one of the largest in Southwest Ohio, remains the only Southwest Ohio high school band to
be invited to the Tournament of Roses Parade.

In addition, the Lakota West marching band has enjoyed a successful 2013 competition season.  The band’s
superior ratings this season have qualified it to compete at the OMEA State Marching Band finals Nov. 2 in
Columbus, where it will perform its 2013 competition show, “West Side Story,” under the direction of Greg
Snyder, Phil Chumley and Tom Racic.

To help offset some of the expenses of the 275 students who will be representing the community as they travel
to New York City, the Lakota West High School marching band has partnered with Uno Chicago Grill for an All-
You-Can-Eat buffet fundraiser on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 11:00am to 8:30pm at the Uno Chicago Grill
located at 9246 Schulze Drive near Union Centre Boulevard in West Chester, OH.  Proceeds from the event will
benefit the Lakota West marching band.

The presidents of the University of Cincinnati (UC) and
Cincinnati State Technical and Community College
have
signed agreements strengthening academic partnerships
between the two institutions.

The signing ceremony featuring UC President Dr. Santa
Ono and Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens, M.
D., marks the most ambitious collaborative effort to date
between a community college that has gained national
attention for its workforce training programs and one of
the nation’s premier research universities.

The agreements guarantee admission to UC for anyone
who graduates from Cincinnati State with an Associate of
Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science
degree and a grade point average of at least 2.0. Students
seeking admission to selective colleges at UC would be
required to meet those admission standards.

The articulation agreements also establish a framework
for increasing the ability of students to fully transfer
credits between the two institutions, and create a
“Cincinnati Pathways Scholars” program that connects qualified Cincinnati State students who are UC-
bound to UC’s campus, academic advisors, and academic events as well as the promise of a scholarship if
they successfully matriculate.

High-fives!
