Cincinnati Children’s Breaks Ground on Family Pet Center
Girls Advancing Technology 2013
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) broke ground on March 28, 2013 on a new
Family Pet Center that will enable patients on extended stays to visit with their own family pets while at
the medical center. The Center will feature visitation bays that are wheelchair and stretcher accessible.

The center is believed to be the first pediatric hospital-based facility in the U.S. to reunite patients with
their own pets. The Family Pet Center is made possible thanks to a $107,500 grant awarded to
CancerFreeKIDS from Impact 100. The facility will focus on cancer patient recovery, but other patients
on extended stays at the medical center will also have access to the new center.

“Pets are really important in people’s lives, especially children,” said Dr. John Perentesis, executive co-
director, Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute at Cincinnati Children’s. “The interaction between patient
and pet can be very therapeutic by bringing joy, comfort and a positive mindset to those suffering,
especially from cancer.”

The Center will be managed by Cincinnati Children’s Child Life Department, which is staffed by
healthcare professionals with expertise in working with children and their families to provide emotional
support, information, and guidance when staying at the medical center.

Construction on the center is scheduled to begin as soon as weather permits with completion likely in
August 2013.

Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates Celebrates 30 Years
Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates (JCG) celebrated 30 years of helping
young adults be successful in life by first being successful in
school.

In 30 years, 30,000 young adults served; 90% graduation rate or
better for JCG students in last ten years; raised more than $70,000
to continue providing services to kids in need in our community;
and JCG and CYC are now strategically aligned to better serve the
next generation of young people.

JCG honored Kay and Jack Geiger and Phillip and Gail Holloman
for their commitment to creating a thriving community.

JCG graduates, Curtis Mims and Whitney Hollingsworth, shared
their stories and experiences as JCG participants and received
achievement awards. Curtis and Whitney are both first generation
college students studying engineering at University of Cincinnati.
With the guidance of their JCG Career Specialists, they were able
to grow and develop both on a personal and professional level.

The 2013 Girls Advancing Technology (GAT), a full day
outreach event focused on getting more girls into
computer science and the tech field, was a hit!

The event brought together middle school girls (6th –
8th grade) from across the greater Cincinnati area and
an impressive set of passionate industry and academic
volunteers from P&G, Gensuite, LLC, JP Morgan Chase,
Cisco Systems, HP, LaChappelle Design, and the Xavier
University Computer Science department.

GAT attendees participated in a variety of CS
Unplugged activities designed to teach the girls about
basic Computer Science principles: programming
basics, image representation, and user experience
design. The GAT mentors led sessions, drawing on their
personal experiences in the industry to show the
variety of careers in the technology field. The afternoon
brought the real fun, where the girls had the chance to
learn about Android App development using the MIT
AppInventor tool.   At the end of the day, participants
walked away with their own programs that simulated a
magic 8 ball on their Android phones.

The response to the event has been overwhelmingly
positive and there are plans for GAT 2014.

As JCG and CYC are now united, the legacy of guiding youth in need to be successful by first graduating
high school and then making a planned transition to college, career or military continues.

High-fives JCG and CYC!
